Welcome to Year 1!
I am Miss Pena and the teaching assistant in Year 1 is Mr McHugh. Here in Year 1 at St Patrick’s, we aim to give your child the skills to be resilient learners, who are confident to go and find challenge. This is a key year group as children transition from Early Years into the more formal learning of Key Stage 1.
We will cover lots of subjects and topics throughout year and we are really excited about the opportunities your child will have and the development we are sure they will make. Reading is key to all learners and in Year 1 we place a lot of emphasis on Phonics. Later this year, your child will complete the Phonics Screening Check. This 1:1 test assesses their ability to recognise, use and apply their learning in phonics. Please do ask them each day which sound they have been working on.
With how important reading is, we will be changing reading books and hearing your children read every week in Year 1. Please ensure they have their book and diary with them every day and read with them at home as regularly as possible. Their home reading book will match the phonics sounds they have been working on in school.
Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday. During these lessons we will be focusing on balance, movement and following routines and we ask that children come into school in their PE kit on these days.
If you have any questions please come and see us on the door before or after school. We are here to help.
